It's been over five years since our 80s quiz night in 2019! I was about 8 months pregnant at the time and blown away by all the support of the evening, getting us to reach our $10k goal.

Covid scuppered a lot of our fundraising plans in the years that followed and it impacted the village we support - Andong.

But, we're now back up to pre-Covid capacity, supporting the community again with education and employment opportunities.

So much development happened during the time we were distanced due to Covid (and motherhood). Phnom Penh's urban sprawl has given rise to new opportunities around the village. Our micro-financing projects have taken off, as the surrounding environment now includes a lot more wealth and custom.

And so, we're now investing in building a community centre for the people of Andong. A safe place for everyone to learn and grow - to be supported and to support others.

With just around 70% of the build funded already, this is what we'll be fundraising for during our quiz night. I hope you can make it!

Back to the 90s...

Following the success of our 80s event, this time we're all about the 90s. This eclectic decade brought rise to Grunge and the Spice Girls, Platforms and Tamagotchis. So page all your mates and secure your table.

Here's where your funds will go...

Dara Children's Trust is a NZ-registered charity, set up by Marijke Timmers in 2010, following her first trip to Cambodia.

In the 15+ years we've been supporting Andong - a community evicted from their riverside homes in 2006 - we've helped hundreds of families educate their children and created employment opportunities across the village.

We believe the key to eradicating poverty lies in education and this is fundamental to our support model. We provide supplemental classrooms to support early literacy for Andong-based children, income generation for youths and parents, and community based programmes to improve the general wellbeing and culture for all. In 2021, we opened ten new classrooms in the local primary school, alongside a new computer room for enhanced learning opportunities.

In 2017, we purchased land between the six different Andong sites. We're now fundraising to build a community centre that will serve the needs of Andong while also providing longer-term ownership and accountability for all.

This will be a unique, architecturally designed building that will enable us to attract paying students to fund a buy-one, fund-one education model. Our ultimate goal is to create sustainability in Andong and to hand over this community centre to the community to run in coming years.

"This event was so much fun. When is the next one? Can you make it 90s themed?"

How does this event fit in with The Marketing Collective?

The Marketing Collective offers meaningful marketing coaching and consulting for ethical entrepreneurs. We're all about enabling better businesses, and one of the strategies we use with our clients to do this is through cause marketing. Aligning your business purpose with a relevant and impactful cause creates more connection with your customers, employees and communities.

At The Marketing Collective, we believe profit is a by-product of purpose. We help businesses get absolute clarity on their purpose, to create more profit, to generate more impact (and market it in a way that feels good). This is your true legacy.

Our Founder, Marijke also founded Dara Children's Trust in 2010. So, it's only natural that our business would align with supporting education projects. After all, we're all about building business capability too!
