You've spent years, maybe decades, becoming very good at what you do. Your clients know it and so do the people who refer you. Yet when you show up online, it can feel like talking to an empty room.
For a lot of service business owners in NZ, the instinct is to fix that with more visibility: more posts, more platforms, a bigger push. In my experience, the fix usually sits lower down. It sits in brand strategy, the work that happens before anyone sees you at all.
Visibility is an amplifier.
Visibility carries a clear message further, and it makes a blurry one easier to scroll past.
I've spent more than 25 years in marketing, nearly two decades of it leading corporate marketing teams. These days I coach business owners through The Source Method at The Marketing Collective. When someone tells me "I just need more visibility", I ask them one question first: what makes you different?
If they can't answer it, or they give me an answer I've heard a million times, I know we're looking at a foundations problem. Usually they're already doing plenty: posting, networking, maybe paying for ads, all of it aimed at being seen. Very little of it reaches anyone, because none of it resonates first.
Growing down before growing up
When a seed germinates, its first move is a root, heading down into the dark. The shoot comes later, once there's something underneath to feed it and hold it steady. A tree's canopy can only spread as far as its roots can support it, and a tall tree on shallow roots is the one that comes down in the first big storm.
Marketing grows the same way. Your roots are your brand strategy: why you exist, who you serve, what you stand for and how your clients talk. Your canopy is your visibility. Resonance connects the two. When the right people read your marketing and recognise themselves in it, they stop, they remember you and they tell someone. That's how resonance creates reach.
In this post, you'll find:
- Why visibility needs clarity before it can do its job
- How your brand strategy underpins strong business growth
- Why this work takes time, and why that time is well spent
Let's start underground.
Visibility needs space to stand out
Being seen depends on standing out, and standing out depends on contrast. A message that sounds like everyone else in your sector has nothing to be seen against.
This catches experts out more than anyone. You learnt to describe your work in the language of your field, and your peers understand it perfectly.
Your clients often don't. They hear credentials, process and qualifications that sound much like the next adviser, consultant or practitioner.
If you could swap your website with three competitors' and nobody would notice, more visibility only puts that sameness in front of more people.
Try the difference question on yourself
- Write down what makes you different. Give yourself five minutes and keep it to a few sentences.
- Read it back as a stranger would. Words like "trusted", "experienced" and "client-focused" describe the entry ticket for your industry. Everyone you compete with can claim them.
- Look for what only you could say. That might be the way you work, the people you're for, the belief that shapes your advice, or the thing clients tell you nobody else did for them.
If step three is hard, that's useful information. It tells you where the root work starts.
Clarity gives visibility somewhere to land.
What root work looks like
What is root work in marketing? Root work is the brand strategy underneath your marketing: your purpose, values, the people you're for, your positioning, the language your clients use and the messages you build from it. It's the first step of The Source Method, done before any visibility work, so your marketing has something clear to say.
The Source Method runs in a deliberate order: brand strategy first, customer experience second, visibility and presence third. Each step feeds the next. These are the roots that do the heaviest lifting for a recognised expert.
Purpose and values
This is where we start: with you. What matters to you, why your business exists and how you want to build it. Everything else grows from here, including the clients you attract.
Who you're for
A lot of marketing begins with sizing the market and picking a target audience to go after.
In The Source Method, this root grows out of the one above it. When your marketing is true to who you already are, the people you're here to serve recognise themselves in it. They share how you see the world, and they're far easier to reach than an audience you've had to talk yourself into.
From there, we name those people properly, from real conversations with real clients. Your marketing gets easier to run, and the work gets better too, because you spend your days with clients who fit.
Positioning
The space you own that others in your field can't credibly claim. This is where the answer to "what makes you different?" gets built properly, from your purpose outward and against what's already in your market.
How your clients talk
Voice of Customer research. These are the words your clients use for their problem, their worries and the results they got. The strongest copy you'll ever write is often a sentence a client has already said to you. Pull out testimonials, emails and call notes from clients you loved working with, and underline the words they used to describe what you did.
What you say, and how you say it
Your value proposition, the three messaging pillars you want to be known for, and the brand voice you say them in. This is the root system made usable, the thing every post, page and conversation draws from.
Why root work can't be rushed
Roots grow at their own pace. You can give a seedling good soil and plenty of water, and it still takes the time it takes.
Root work has the same rhythm. Getting clear on your purpose, your positioning and your clients' language takes thinking time, real conversations and a few drafts that feel wrong before one feels right. If you've been feeling behind, take this as permission to slow down. Slowing down here speeds up everything that comes after.
AI has raised the stakes. Content is faster to produce than it has ever been, so feeds are full of marketing that looks like marketing and sounds like everyone else.
AI can help a canopy grow faster, but only if the roots are deep enough first - this is your heart centred work before any technology can assist. When everyone can produce more, people recognise the business with deep roots.
The reach was always in the roots
The visibility you want is real, and it's within reach. It grows out of clarity. When you know what makes you different and you say it in the words your clients already use, your marketing does more with less. The right people find you, recognise themselves and stay.
